CPU Benchmark
The names of the computer processors listed above (AMD Ryzen, Intel i5, Intel i7 etc) are made up by marketing teams to try and help users understand which ‘range’ they are buying into – but in reality these names can be a pretty poor indicator as to how ‘fast’ a given computer processor will be. As a result we provide independently verified performance benchmarks – a comparison of real world speed – for each processor. The benchmarks simply show how well a product may do against other products. When comparing benchmarks, the higher the value of the results, the better. For further details and the most up to date benchmarks for these processors, please see here: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/
Memory (RAM)
RAM is the temporary memory of a computer which starts to get used from the moment the computer is switched on. The operating system that loads when the computer starts – and the programs you open – will ‘load’ into this memory. If you try to open too many programs at once then the computer will either slow down or – in some circumstances – grind to a halt. As you close programs they ‘unload’ from the memory and allow the computer to reuse it for something else.
As a result, computers with more memory will allow more programs (or more complex programs) to run at the same time before slowing down. For everyday use we recommend a minimum of 8GB RAM if your users only use one or two applications at a time, but where users are likely to have a number of applications open at the same time we rec0mmend 16GB RAM instead. Budget conscious customers can go for 8GB now but upgrade to 16GB RAM or 32GB RAM at a later date though of course this typically works out to be more expensive in the long run.
Storage (SSD Hard Disk)
A computer needs adequate storage to store the operating system, installed programs and saved files. For most customers with a few office programs a 256GB SSD is adequate, but for power users or to “future proof” your PC a 512GB SSD is necessary. Note that ALL of the computers we supply will have the faster style SSD hard disks installed – we no longer supply the slower HDD style of disk in desktop computers unless we have a good reason to do so. Disks can easily be upgraded to higher capacity versions at a later date though of course this typically works out to be more expensive in the long run.
Onboard Graphics
These computers include an “onboard” graphics system which is perfectly adequate for most users running line of business applications. Users that run word processors, spreadsheets, email, web and accounts software will have no problem with these applications, even the occasional use of presentation tools, 2D CAD and basic image manipulation will be okay on the systems here showing 16GB RAM. At one of our sites, most of a design and marketing team uses these HP ProDesks to run Adobe Creative Cloud, albeit at a basic level, but we’ve found some Adobe users do need something better. Users that run graphics intensive applications such as CAD / CAM / Video Editing etc should contact us to get a quote on a more powerful computer that includes a dedicated graphics card designed to run more powerful applications.
Operating Systems
Microsoft Windows 10 & 11
At time of writing (May 2022) most customers will want Microsoft Windows 10 Professional installed in order for their computer to work in their business environment and this is the default option. Microsoft Windows 11 will eventually become the standard install however were not rolling it out just yet. As always, Microsoft release buggy software and we prefer to wait a while before putting this into a production environment.
Linux Distributions (e.g. Mint, Debian, Ubuntu)
In homes and businesses, some customers are switching on to the possibilities provided by Linux based operating systems which offer a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). In line with our Purpose and Values we wish to promote these operating systems as valid alternatives. Such operating systems are completely free, transparently written, less demanding on hardware, and can be more stable and reliable than Windows by a very long margin. Read more about the principles of open source software here.
Warranty
From 1st January 2022, all of the new HP ProDesks we supply will (unless requested) be supplied with a 5 year manufacturers warranty as standard. We are taking this step for the following reasons:
- A long warranty protects your investment and means a guaranteed 5 years use out of the purchased product.
- The long warranty reduces the environmental impact of purchasing a computer that would otherwise be disposed of if it became faulty after a shorter warranty.
- Generally speaking it is more cost effective to buy a good PC with a decent warranty than it is to buy a cheap PC with a poor warranty.
- Things do go wrong from time to time – but we never have any problems getting HP to provide warranty service, unlike other manufacturers.
Our Price
The prices quoted above exclude VAT, pre-delivery preparation, installation and site fees which are invoiced according to How we Work. If you prefer to set up the device yourself we will be happy to deliver the computer without this additional work at no extra cost, please specify if you want us to “deliver only” at time of order.
Equivalent to…
It’s easy to be put off by price if one computer is more expensive than another one. For this reason we have shown you above how little the price difference is over the whole lifespan of the computer which we have calculated as follows:
price of computer ÷ number of days in warranty period
Why buying a better computer is more cost effective.
Contemplate this statement: When you buy a cheaper, lower specification computer you are committing yourself to having that slower model for its entire lifespan. If a faster computer can save your users just 10 minutes in a working day, you will save them 2500 minutes per year – equivalent to 26 working days over a five year period. This could be worth at least £2000 to you in extra productivity!
Every customer has their own unique budget and financial plan to consider and so we understand some customers will go for a cheaper model and others a more expensive one – but more powerful computers are clearly better value over the longer term and so we recommend you treat computers as investments rather than costs and within reason buy the best you can.
