We have been selling, installing and supporting the UniFi range of Network Video Recorders (NVR’s) and IP cameras since 2014. At that time these systems were considered ‘disruptive’ because they offered better quality and a cheaper price in a package that ran over existing network infrastructure where possible. Where customers were being sold older style coax based CCTV systems by installers that did not really understand IP camera technology, we were able to step in and offer something better. In 2022 most CCTV installers have caught on to this newer, better technology, but we continue to supply these IP based CCTV systems simply because we know them and because they run over the rest of the network infrastructure that we provide.
Ubiquiti UniFi Protect Network Video Recorder (UNVR)
The Ubiquiti UniFi UNVR is an enterprise grade network video recorder. With four drive bays it is easy to replace or expand hard disks whilst fibre and gigabit Ethernet ports mean the UNVR can connect to either a typical small business network or a fibre backbone. Automatic RAID1 offers improved disk performance and redundancy against disk failure; the UNVR is well built and typically rack mounted.
Once set up, you can access your surveillance recordings from virtually anywhere using the intuitive graphical user interface on any computer with a web browser or using a mobile app available for iOS and Android-based devices. The UNVR supports up to 50 cameras, subject to disk and network speed.
For customers with smaller systems (e.g. 10 cameras or less) that are configured for motion detection recording (as opposed to always on recording), we would typically be able to store several months worth of recordings. This fluctuates according to how busy the site is or what sort of quality you want to have. The system can be upgraded with larger disks as required. In the interests of GDPR compliance we do however recommend recordings are purged after an agreed period of time.

Chinese CCTV Cameras and Privacy Concerns
Over the last few years the US government has moved to ban the use of systems “that are deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the security and safety of United States persons”. It would be easy to speculate that the US could be pontificating about various ‘threats’ under cover of national security in order to gain simple competitive advantage but this isn’t all hot air. There a reasons even a layperson can understand that are reason enough to avoid some of the equipment that has been manufactured in certain states; we are talking of course about China.
At least some of the basis for this ban is based upon relatively new Chinese laws (in particular the National Intelligence Law) that compel Chinese businesses and citizens — including through academic institutions, research service providers, and investors — to support and facilitate China’s government access to the collection, transmission and storage of data. Even the UK government have now banned the equipment on “sensitive sites”. As you will see in own Purpose and Values statement we like to encourage privacy, not reduce it, and so we tend to agree that providing equipment from these manufacturers could pose a risk.
We’re no legal experts but the policy seems to be – if certain types of ICT equipment is manufactured in China by a Chinese owned company, they are in scope for a possible ban.
We have included various evidential links below, but to summarise our own view, we will not supply certain brands of CCTV cameras, including Dahua and Hikvision.

For Chinese firms, theft of your data is now a legal requirement. (Includes outbound links for verification)
IMPORTANT NOTES
The cameras listed on this page are the third generation (G3) of UniFi cameras. UniFi have announced a new fourth generation (G4) range but these are not yet readily available. We can place orders with our UK supplier but there will be a wait for them. At some point UniFi may stop supporting the third generation but we anticipate customers purchasing G3 cameras will get many years of use from them.
If you require guidance in terms of where to place cameras, we recommend you speak to your insurers, or a professional CCTV installer such as ADT. If you do not require this guidance we can help you with cabling, installation, setup and ongoing maintenance and support.
