When you buy a new server from IT Norwich you’ll always get a manufacturer warranty as part of the package. Whether it is a Dell PowerEdge or an HP ProLiant, such warranties will usually be for a three to five year period, and can sometimes be extended to seven years. Such warranties offer excellent peace of mind for mission critical servers.
After the manufacturers warranty expires, what will you do? Most manufacturers will not extend the warranty beyond seven years. The server will be considered end of life and they’ll want you to buy a new server.
In our view – unless you’re running software that demands high performance hardware – old servers are often perfectly fine for your needs. As long as the operating system is supported and the hard disks are monitored carefully you should be able to squeeze another few years out of it. This reduces the cost of ownership over time and it’s better for the planet too.
A word of warning though – a mission critical server without a warranty is a serious risk.

How do you find parts quickly and cheaply for an out of warranty server?
When an out of warranty server goes wrong, you might have a huge problem on your hands. Some parts – like a failed hard disk – are reasonably easy to find and replace, but other parts such as a motherboard or power supply can be much harder to source.
When you call the manufacturer for help with an out of warranty server they may be able to help you to source spare parts but you’ll pay a premium to do so. If you don’t want to pay the premium rates charged by the manufacturer then you may be able to find spares on eBay or elsewhere, but there is often a delay in finding the right part being delivered – so you risk days of downtime while you are waiting for them to turn up. Even then there’s a chance that these used parts are faulty when they do arrive.

- Sent to site by courier and to be installed by a member of the IT\norwich team
- All parts and third party labour are included in the price of the warranty.
